Throughout history St Martin-on-the-Hill has embraced and highly valued the arts. The Friends of St Martin’s are pleased to continue in that tradition by appointing Angela Chalmers as artist in residence.

Angela uses historical research in her arts practice and is largely interested in the beginnings of St Martin’s, particularly the life of Mary Craven, benefactor and daughter of highly respected Hull surgeon Robert Martin Craven.

The church was built chiefly at Miss Craven’s expense and her generosity continued to enrich and beautify it with designs by the Pre-Raphaelite artists for many years afterwards.

Angela has described her residency as an exciting opportunity to create site-specific installations inspired by the beautiful, quiet, mediative space. She is building a body of work under the name of “Something About Mary’ that aims to raise the profile of Mary Craven. These works explore nineteenth century dress, the language of flowers and the symbolism of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Angela exhibits widely and has participated in exhibitions in London, Sweden and France. Her work is held in private collections in UK, USA, and Japan. Angela uses an early photographic printing process to create works on paper and textiles.
